Weekend Recap

We stayed home this past weekend, something that is not super common for us.  But, as is our lives, we pretty much went non-stop the entire time.  We are (not) patiently waiting for our addition/renovation to be done to the house and had a ton of cleaning, moving, and little projects that needed done.  Here's a bit of a recap of what we got accomplished 'round these parts.

The little town we now live in has a huge rodeo each year in July.  We're talking rodeo, parade, free bbq, contests, trade show in the park.....it's a big deal for such a tiny place!  We decided that we should probably participate in the events.

On Friday night we headed over for a lovely dinner of bbq brisket and beans, followed by watching a bit of the rodeo.  The mutton bustin' was by far my favorite event.  It is open only to children under 7.  They put the little guys (and girls!) on the back of a wooly ewe, tell them to hold on for dear life, turn the ewes loose, and let the fun begin.  I am kicking myself for leaving my phone in the car or I'd have photos for you.  The night we were there, the winner was a little blonde boy with missing teeth and big chaps.  He got a belt buckle for his efforts.  Of course, this got the wheels turning in my head for the future and The Baby from Texas.  He does have a grandpa with a barn full of sheep to practice on, after all...

We ended up leaving after about an hour of rodeo fun because the poor pregnant lady had to pee.  I was not about to hit up a porta potty at a rodeo full of drunk cowboys in the middle of July.  No sir. So we called it a night and headed home.

Instead of going right to bed, we decided to continue working on a minor home improvement project:  painting the front porch and door.  Our front door was painted sort of a dull, old lady blue color that we both hated.  We wanted to spice it up a bit and decided it might be fun to paint it turquoise to give some pop to the white house.  In addition, we had to re-paint the porch trim, which was the same old lady blue.  So, you can picture me, 8.5 months pregnant crouched down painting the porch.  I'm sure it was a sight to see.

Here are before, during and after shots for your enjoyment.

I'll admit, the turquoise is a bit brighter than I had envisioned.  But, this was our second can of paint (the first was far worse!) so we just went with it.  I actually like it. The Boy from Texas is a bit on the fence still....

On Saturday we continued on in the community spirit and hit up the parade.  We took Angus with us and, as usual, he was a hit.  Everyone wanted to pet him and wave to him and the cheerleaders even threw him a Popsicle, which turned his little tongue blue.  All in all, he liked the parade fine, he was particularly fond of the horses, not so much of the fire trucks with their loud sirens.

On Sunday morning we went to church and then came home and got back to work on more home improvement projects.  I cleaned out and wiped down all our kitchen cabinets and pantry (thank you, mouse, for making this necessary), while The Boy from Texas re-did a closet in our hallway.  I am so, SO mad at myself for not doing a before and after because, y'all.  That husband of mine did work.  This cabinet was dirty, had holes in the wall, we're pretty sure is how the mouse came in, had no shelves, and the nastiest linoleum floor you've ever seen.

About three hours later, take a gander at what we have now!  White walls, wood floors, and a shelf!  The plan is for this to be the cleaning supply closet--the vacuum, swiffer, and shark mop all fit right under the shelf.

And so, there you have it.  A pretty mundane weekend at home in our world.

A Weekend in Ft. Worth with the Boy

"She was struck by the simple truth that sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people..." ~Nicholas Sparks

At 3:00 on Friday afternoon, I got a call from a pretty excited Boy from Texas who said, "I'm on the way to Ft. Worth, get headed north!"  We were hoping to be able to meet up in Ft. Worth this weekend, but we had to wait to get the green light from a truck dealership where he had to pick up something for work.  I had pretty much given up hope, so I was beyond excited to get that phone call and hop in my truck for a little road trip.

Y'all.  I have the sweetest boyfriend in the entire world and we had an absolute blast.  I probably think this every time we hang out, but this might be one of my favorite weekends.  We ate a lot, saw some friends, caught up with Aunt Delta Dawn, did some shopping, watched some football....it was awesome.

With Ski Trip John at Rodeo Goat

 We also went on what we called our first actual dinner date.  It's true....we've been dating for over 8 months and Saturday night was the first time that we ever got dressed up and went to dinner, just the two of us.  At one point on the way to the restaurant, The Boy from Texas said, "You know, it's kinda weird spending time with you and not having 40 people following us around."  Ha!  To celebrate....fajitas for everyone!

I realize that this sounds cheesy and annoying and all of those things, but sometimes in this relationship I feel like I need to pinch myself to see if it's real.  More than once this weekend, I thought to myself, "Stop and look around.  This is what you wanted for so long and were sure you'd never find."

I waited for a long time for The Boy from Texas to make his appearance...but from where I'm sitting, that wait was worth every minute.

Weekend in Ft. Worth

“Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when you’re in need. People who genuinely care. They are the ones worth keeping in your life. Everyone else is just passing through.”  ~Karl Marx

Well, it's Monday again.  And it feels like Monday for this girl.  I'm still in serious recovery mode after a weekend of fun in Ft. Worth.

The weekend involved:

* Me using my skills of persuasion on American Airlines in a truck stop bathroom and getting a refund when The Boy from Texas couldn't make his flight;

*  A steak dinner in the Stockyards where Real Cowboy ordered calf fries and a salad (interesting combo);
Blonde OKG and The Real Cowboy
*A Seven and Seven or two;

*  Watching a little rodeo and playing high/low during the team roping;

*  Checking dancing at Billy Bob's off my bucket list;

*  Hanging out with the long snapper for the TCU football team;

* IHOP at 2 in the morning where a fight ensued over who would pay for Real Cowboy's biscuits and gravy that BOKG ate;

* The Boy from Texas driving all night to get there at 5:30 Saturday morning,

*  Lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Animal House and the most precious baby boy in the world;

*  A tour of TCU;
Football stadium.

Basketball arena where Ski Trip John will graduate in December!

The Quad

*  A couple of OSU pictures on the purple campus...;

Go Pokes!

*  Hanging out at Ski Trip John's house;

* A Ranger's game;

  *  Some ice cream;

*  A really trashy bar;

*  More IHOP (the waiter seriously knew my name and order the second night when I walked in);

*   and lots of fun.

I have to say that one of the things I absolutely love about the people in my life is that even when they do not know each other, they are all so darn awesome that you can throw them together and they will all get along great.  This weekend just reinforced that I am completely blessed to be surrounded with so many amazingly fun people.

It.  Was.  Awesome.

And just as a note for the single ladies out there, Blonde Oklahoma Girl and I had both been single for ever a while when she started dating Real Cowboy and I started dating The Boy from Texas.  A year ago we laid on a beach in Costa Rica pretty much convinced that there was no one out there for either of us and we would die alone with cats (except that she has dogs and I'm allergic to cats, which meant we'd just die alone).  Lots of things can happen in a year.  (And it could well have been the clarity we gained from the beach in Costa Rica that made this happen, so if you are looking for an excuse to book a vacation....)

Weekend Recap

“In terms of days and moments lived, you’ll never again be as young as you are right now, so spend this day, the youth of your future, in a way that deflects regret. Invest in yourself. Have some fun. Do something important. Love somebody extra. In one sense, you’re just a kid, but a kid with enough years on her to know that every day is priceless." ~Victoria Moran

It's Tuesday folks, and that means we're closer to the freakin' weekend than we were yesterday!  I thought I'd give ya'll a little weekend recap of the happenings around here.

Sami's Shenanigans

 On Friday night, Soldier Cousin came to town!  I love that he's stationed within driving distance so we can hang out.  We ended up meeting up with BFF at the Dixie Chicken for a beer and just general conversation. Which somehow led to BFF suggesting that maybe I should consider getting some eggs harvested because my biological clock is ticking.  Just normal Friday afternoon conversation for me and BFF.  (We have an interesting relationship.)  After The Chicken, we headed to this amazing restaurant here in town called La Bodega for tacos with my New Roomie.  It was (by some miracle!) cooled off enough that we got to sit out on the patio, eat our tacos, and just hang out.  It was an awesome Friday night in my book.

But....I failed to take a single picture.  FAIL.

On Saturday, I was wide awake at 7 in the morning, while Soldier Cousin slept in like a good teenager.  So I ran a bunch of errands, balanced my checkbook, did some shopping.....wild and crazy, that's me!  After we grabbed some lunch, I took him on a tour of the A&M campus, including the ever-popular photo op at Kyle Field. Look how tiny he looks!!

Then it was time for a little road trip.  BFF, The Persuasion, Soldier Cousin and I headed to Waco.  First stop:  Baylor University to take some pictures to send to their biggest fan, Cousin Swiss Mister.  We drove all over that dang campus trying to find the bear habitat, where the mascots live.  We must have asked 5 people--Baylor students/alum, no doubt--and none of them could give us coherent directions.  Come on, people!  But we finally found them.  And they were taking a nap.  Grrr.  But we took the picture that Cousin Swiss Mister requested.  I don't think he was so impressed with my foam finger....GO POKES!

Check out the anatomy of taking this photo

Setting up the foam finger....

BFF thinking he was too important to get off the phone...

The money shot.
Then we headed off to check out the new football stadium being constructed.  Looked like a construction sight to me.  That's about all I can say.

And then, it was time for the main event.  Kiddo was playing an acoustic set at golf course/country club.  I've heard him play his guitar 100 times, but it was my first time seeing him play at a show.  He did great!

He looks a little Eric Church-ish, no?

Instructions to BFF here?  "Look cute."

Love that kid!

Then we wrapped up the night with dinner/breakfast at Denny's (attached to a truck stop, no less) and the hour drive back home.  I'm way, way, way too old for this kind of thing.  Especially when I wake up at 7:30 on the dot Sunday morning.  I'll be trying to catch up on sleep for the rest of the week.

More Tums Than Beer....A Weekend Recap

"This is where the cowboy rides away...." ~George Strait (title of the tour we went to this weekend!)

What a weekend I just had.  I am pretty sure I am going to be sleep deprived for a month and that I gained 10 pounds.  I also discovered that I am officially old when a wild and crazy weekend involves more Tums than beer.  Yep.  I'm that kid.  (Not that I had any chance to escape this fate thanks to my genetics and a Daddy who is constantly carrying around a bottle of Tums and saying, "Don't worry, I'm packin' heat.")  Anyway, let's chat about the weekend, shall we?

Thursday

Yes, when you are on sabbatical from the working world, weekends begin on Thursday. :)  I have said it before and you'll hear it over and over again on this blog, but I have THE best friends in the world.  Hands down, no question, don't even try to convince me otherwise.  It's just the truth.

Last Thursday night, College Roomie and McCain picked me up to go to dinner at this restaurant that College Roomie has been raving about (no, seriously, she has an obsession with the sopapilla burger). So off to dinner we go, me dressed in flip flops, jeans, and a black shirt and hoodie.  I'm yapping about something and not paying attention (shocking to know one who actually knows me) and I see my friend from law school and her husband.  I think to myself, "What a coincidence they would be here too!"  Then I glance over and see someone who looks a little like my friend Miss Texico.  I looked back and it was Miss Texico.  Being super bright and observant, I say, "Everyone I know is here!"  Finally, it dawned on me.....everyone I knew was there for me!

Yep, College Roomie threw me a surprise going away dinner.  It was just the best.  I loved having so many of my friends from this chapter in my life together in one place.  And she totally fooled me.  I had NO idea, which was amazing because Brett-Brett and Mrs. Texas were in on this and both managed to keep a secret...a small miracle in itself!

Friday
Well Aunt Delta Dawn, Queso, Cousin Whitney and I were supposed to ride the Tram and cross that baby off my 30 by 30 list.  But guess what?  Closed for maintenance.  Grrr.  I'm not meant to ride that tram.  The last time I tried, I had plans of taking this boy from Texas, but the State Championship basketball game got in the way.  Guess I'll try again in a couple weeks!
What did we do instead?  Packed my house.  Cousin Whitney, God bless her, is a sort of packing genie.  You've never seen someone be able to fit so much stuff into a box.  I'm pretty sure had she not been here, I would not have been able to move.  No, seriously.

And then, it was time for the main event.  The King of Country.  That's right kids, we hit up the George Strait "This Is Where The Cowboy Rides Away" Tour.  And it was awesome.  Like, there are no words kind of awesome.  I'd seen him before, but honestly think this concert was 10 times better.  He played a lot of old songs, which are totally my favorite. We had THE best time, and I couldn't have gone with a more fun group of ladies!

Waiting to get into The Pit

Best.  Aunts.  Ever.

The whole crazy group!

Me and Cousin Whitney

Me and my sweet friend who I hadn't seen in like 8 years!

This lucky b*%&# has THE best job in the world....hang out with him all day,
stand behind him all night, and get paid for it!

Packed house.
George and Martina sang Jackson....maybe my favorite part of the night!

Saturday
Saturday morning brought College Roomie's Bridal Brunch.  It was absolutely beautiful!

The hostess caught me poking at these and said,
"Honey, you can eat them, they're real."

Donut Kabobs....genius!

All the un-married girls stayed away from these quiches....

Our lovely bride opening gifts.

Me and Aunt Jewel

Love this one!

Some of the loot.

The bride and the mamas.

Me and the sister of the bride. :)

The bridesmaids (minus Mrs. Arizona)

After that, poor Cousin Whitney and I packed for the rest of the night.  She is THE BEST and somehow we managed to get my house all packed up and ready to move to Texas!  I couldn't have done it without her.  Well, here and the 90's country Pandora station.  That stuff's pure gold, kids!

Sunday

Sunday begins the epic road trip to Texas with College Roomie.  I say epic even before we leave because roadtrips of the past of held broken down vehicles, heart attack scares, and orange juice from the carton.  We're crazy like that.  To read her take on prior road trips, check out her blog here.  No doubt you'll hear all about this one soon!
