The European Birthday Adventure Plan

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts."  Mark Twain

As you all know, I'm turning the big 3-0 this year, and for years it's been on my bucket list to take an amazing 30th birthday trip.  Last year about this time, I decided that Eastern Europe was going to be my destination.  And now, after lots of planning, analysis, figuring, finding travel buddies, and saving money, the European Birthday Adventure is in place.

I've convinced Miss Canada and Cousin Swiss Mister to join in on the fun.

We're now working on my friend King of Capitol Hill.  Why he needs more convincing than the pictures below and my charming personality is beyond me.  But apparently he does, so everyone tell him to come in a comment below.
King of Capitol Hill thought I had no picturs of him..think again!

Anyway, we're trying to leave things pretty open to just sort of do and see whatever comes along.  We'll have about 3 days in each stop, and I plan on squeezing in as much fun as I can during that time.

Now, here is where you come in.....if you have any pointers, advice, etc. on any of these locations, PLEASE comment below!  I'll be extremely grateful and you'll likely get a shout out on my blog when I return and was saved by your great advice!

With that, here is the plan!

First Stop:  Prague, Czech Republic
Main points of interest:  Charles Bridge, St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle, Old Town Square.

Second Stop:  Vienna, Austria
Main points of interest:  St. Stephen Cathedral, Mozarthaus, Schonbrunn Palace.

Third Stop:  Budapest, Hungary
Main points of interest:  Castle Hill, Heroes Square, Hungarian Parliament Building.

Fourth Stop:  Krakow, Poland
Main points of interest:  Wawel Castle, Krakow Market Square, St. Mary's Church.

Fifth Stop:  Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Poland
Main points of interest:  Auschwitz, Birkenau, Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

Final Stop:  Warsaw, Poland

Main points of interest:  Victory Square, St. John's Cathedral, Gestapo Headquareters Museum.

I'm honestly beyond excited.  I can't think of a more fun way to celebrate turning 30 than a trip like this.  It's amazing is to think that not that long ago...in my own lifetime, these countries were under communist rule and I would not have been able to visit them at all.  I absolutely can't wait to share the trip with all of you guys!  Oh, and to eat lots of pastries and gelato, because based on my last trip, that's what Europe is all about!

How exciting! I've been to all these places - Prague and Budapest are on my favorite cities list. Prague is just beautiful to walk around. Also, they have beautiful jewelry there.

Budapest - I have a slight obsession with bridges and Chain Bridge is a must see. It connects Buda and Pest and has amazing lion statues. Also in Budapest, we took a dinner cruise on the Danube River. The lights at night were beautiful. Budapest is also known for their thermal baths - we went to the Gellert Hotel. It was a lot of fun and quite a different experience. And finally, eating chicken paprikash at Gundel's. My father was born in Budapest so the city holds a special place in my heart - not to mention, it was pretty cool to have my last name pronounced correctly.

The Market in Krakow is quite bustling. We found beautiful Christmas ornaments there. Years later, I was in Tucson and came across similar ornaments from Poland that were worth a lot of money.

Enjoy your trip!

Sounds amazing! I was just informed last weekend by my husband, that for his 30th next year, he wants me to set up something like a NASCAR victory lane and when he comes out of the car, everyone sprays him with beer and champagne. REALLY?!?! But tell you what...I'll make it happen! hahaha

Ooooo, you're going to have so. much. fun. I can't stand it. I'm giddy with anticipation and I'm not even going on the trip!

King of Capitol Hill MUST go. End of story.

You should email that Jenni-Germany-Austria girl who has that one blog. I don't know if she's still living over there, but she would have some good tips on what to do. And she's a fellow OKState alum, so we know she's smart and awesome.

Gosh I am so jealous I couldn't join you on the trip! It is going to be amazing!

King of Capitol Hill you HAVE to go, for a couple reasons:
1. I wanted to go, but couldn't because of school.
2. If you are on the edge about going (which I don't see how you could be with beautiful sites and amazing tour buddies), go for ME!
3. This will be a trip you will be telling your grandkids about someday.

Oh and I talked to my grandma again and she said y'all should go see Salzburg, Austria. She went back in 1990 and absolutely feel in love!

Can't wait to hear more details about the trip!

I'm so jealous. I had a whole Eastern Europe backpacking trip planned for this summer but I didn't have the funds. As for King of Capitol Hill...you shouldn't have to be convinced to go to Europe. You regret what you don't do way more than what you do.
