I spent a big chunk of the last week watching high school basketball at the State Tournament. I'll have a full blog about my observations about that later this week. I'm waiting for everyone to get pictures posted on facebook so I can steal a few to go with my own! To read a fellow Loganite's take on it, click here!
But today, let's talk about the comments that I had to deal with all weekend with regard to my relationship status (or lack thereof).
Let me preface this with two disclaimers. (1) I'm not picking on anyone in particular who may have said some version of this to me---trust me, I can't even count everyone who did. (2) I am a firm believer in us all making our own chocies in life--some people move away, some don't. Some people get married at 18 and some don't. I do not think that there is a right and wrong at all and totally disagree with judging anyone else's choices. So, no one be offended, okay? Good.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, when I am dating someone important, you'll know. I'll plaster it on facebook and take out a billboard. You won't ever need to ask me that question. But apparently some people don't read my blog (shocking!) and still insist on asking me some version of, "What's wrong with you that you can't land a husband?" Here are a few responses to my favorite questions. And no, I have never actually used these. This is what I wish I was clever (and mean) enough to think up on the spot.
1. You came here BY YOURSELF?!?! Oh, the horror! Listen, darlin' if I didn't go places by myself, I'd sit at home on my couch all the time. So yes, no one walked me in to the gym and no one holds my purse when I go to the bathroom. But I'm pefectly capable of doing those two things BY MYSELF and getting to run around and visit with everyone in the gym and sit with some great friends from back home. I bet you I got more hugs last week than most people get in a year. So the answer is that I drove here in the car and walked to the door by myself, but once I got inside, I was far from alone. Thanks for your concern.
2. I hear your little brother is getting married...what are you waiting on? Mars and Jupiter to align. What do you want me to say in response to this question? I'm waiting on some guy to show up who is not a complete tool and who actually asks me out. Finding those two things in the same person proves harder than it should. I'm waiting on the right person and not just the next random one who pops up somewhere. Oh, and what happened to the question I frequently got asked as a child that goes something like, "if your lttle brother jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?" I learned the answer to that question years ago. It's no.
3. You look good, how are you still single? Well if I look cute it must be me horrible personality that's keeping a ring off my finger. If I knew why I was still single, don't you think I'd so something about it? And while we're on that topic, why are you still living with your parents?
4. You're not getting any younger. Back at ya, gramps! There is not some bomb timer clicking down that's going to hit 00:00 and if I'm not married by that time, the world ends or I have to move into some creepy house and get 5 cats. I'm glad I didn't get married when I was younger. I had no idea who I was or what I wanted (and looking back at what I thought I wanted makes me cringe!) I refuse to let some arbitrary timeline dictate the choices that I make. And by the way, last week someone asked me if I was a senior in high school, clearly I'm not aging that fast.
5. Hang in there honey, some day he'll come. Oh good, that comment is the one thing that will keep me from jumping off a bridge tonight. Please. I don't need to "hang in there" waiting on anybody. My life is great---I've got an awesome job, the best friends in the world, and an amazing family. I get to travel all over the country to see my friends, go to football games, and run races. I've been to Europe and Mexico and I'm headed to Costa Rica in May. I don't need to hang in there, I need a guy who can hang on and keep up.

Complete and total awesomeness is what this is! Favorite line,"I don't need to hang in there, I need a guy who can hang on and keep up!"
LOVE IT!!
Oh soooooo good. And soooooo true. All of it. People need to live and let live. Talk about projecting their own insecurities onto you!
You just keep doing what you're doing. You're a rockstar.

This makes me smile! I couldn't agree more "THOSE" questions. I have a whole other list to add to those since CDB is a little more "aged" than I am.... I am sure you can imagine! Love the blog, love you!! -- Micca
What about "I've got a guy partially constructed in the basement. I just need a heart and a right lung to complete him" [begin looking at their sternum the way other people look at a used car]?
I love this post! Thanks for sharing - I have many single girl friends who are getting hung up what other people think about their "singleness". I am forwarding this post to them right now to read!
All I have to say is God Bless Small Towns....I get these questions too!.....but its impossible that "all the good ones are gone!"....On to running the Remember the Ten!
I love the "You came here alone?" question. I get that one all alone. And what I want to say is "Definitely! I like myself better than almost anyone I know. . . and no, I'm not afraid to travel alone, whether to The Pit or Taos for the weekend or across the country. It makes for some incredible freedom. . " As for "hang in there?" You're doing what you do with incredible panache and style and great fun and only when someone comes along who can keep up will he be worth it. Believe me, I know! Great post. Keep it up.
BAAHHAHAHAHA! I'll be sure to keep my grandma away from you because her biggest concern is how i'm going to meet anyone while working out in the sticks!
You Rock Tiff!!

First of all... way to be! Love this. :)
I had just turned 17 when my husband and I started dating. He was 18. We were each other's first boyfriend/girlfriend. We got married 4 years later (just after graduating college) when we were 21 and 22. It was perfect for our story. It made sense. BUT, that's our story. A lot of people don't understand us marrying the first person we dated. People don't understand us getting married so young. People make all kinds of judgements and assumptions. But that's okay 'cause it's our story and I love it. Who gets to say when you SHOULD get married or to whom? Silly people making assumptions.
My friend wanted me to share this article with you: http://shine.yahoo.com/love-sex/5-things-stop-saying-single-friends-194600688.html
I love this post! I am married, but I felt just as you do before I found my husband. Great post!
THIS MADE MY DAY.
My favorite is when people always seem shock when they find out my younger (married with a child) sister is younger, not older than me... But she has a baby.
yes, i know, but i also still know that I am older. You can't convince me she is older.
as if a baby or wedding band is the only indicator of maturity or age haha!!
you made me smile, thanks!
Very very well said. I've snapped before at a shower when the woman said to me that she couldn't figure out why I was still single even though I was smart pretty and funny. I said, and I kid you not, "well you are fat and ugly, how did you end up married?"
Yes. I know. One of my least favorite moments. As the words were coming out I couldn't stop it.
I've heard all of the above.
But reality is, how many of those people by the way have perfect relationships? Furthermore, the people that have, or claim to, all the the answers and have the "perfect" marriage chances are not happy.
If anything, being single offers you the opportunity to relate to more people, be a wonderful and understanding friend, and also when the right one comes along you are able to appreciate it that much more. That being said, relationships come with their own set of tough times too! Don't forget that!!
One of my favorite posts Tiffany!! Your responses rock!!! My favorite line "I need a guy who can hang on and keep up." That's my girl, keep attracting the perfect guy for you. Love ya
Well I am a little late reading this blog, but if I could 'like' this 100 times or steal your spot on thoughts and commit them to memory for every time I get asked those questions. I love your perspective on life, love and all that falls in between! As with everybody else I too love the line "I need a guy who can keep up and hang on!" I think that is what we (all single girls) all need to be looking for! You are a knock out Tiff! Keep being awesome :)
